Resilience

In this painting, I chose the cathedral as a symbol of the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Ukraine, my homeland, has been under constant attack since February 2022.
I chose to paint Saint Sophia Cathedral because of its remarkable history. The cathedral has stood at the heart of Kyiv for nearly a thousand years. Within its ancient walls, history has unfolded: the reigns of great kings and queens, centuries of prayer and learning, and the endurance of a people deeply connected to their land and faith.
The cathedral has survived devastating challenges, including the Mongol invasion of 1240 and the Soviet era, when the Soviet regime carried out a harsh anti-religious campaign and considered demolishing the cathedral. Yet, it endured.
Today, in the 21st century, as Ukraine faces renewed attempts to destroy its spirit and identity, Saint Sophia still stands—unbroken, watchful, and alive.
Like Saint Sophia, the Ukrainian people have faced unimaginable loss and violence, yet they remain rooted, strong, and unwavering.
